Anxiety and Depression Therapy
Practical, evidence-based treatment for panic, constant worry, low mood, sleep trouble, and the slow loss of interest in things you used to like.
Anxiety and depression usually travel together
People often arrive certain they have one and not the other. In practice they overlap constantly: months of high-alert anxiety are exhausting, and exhaustion looks like depression. Depression makes everything harder, and hard things generate anxiety.
The good news in that overlap is that treatment for one frequently improves the other, because both run on the same two engines, what you do with your days, and what you believe while you are doing it.
How treatment works
Most of this work is cognitive behavioral in nature, which is less clinical than it sounds. You learn to catch the thought that fires before the feeling, check whether it is actually true, and stop treating every prediction your brain makes as a briefing from reality.
Alongside that, the behavior side: re-introducing activity when depression has shrunk your world, and approaching avoided situations in small graded steps when anxiety has done the same. Avoidance is the mechanism that keeps anxiety alive. Getting out from under it is most of the treatment.
Expect to leave sessions with something specific to try. Expect to come back and report honestly on how it went, including when it did not go well.
What we work with
- Generalized anxiety, the low hum that never fully switches off
- Panic attacks and the fear of the next one
- Social anxiety and performance anxiety
- Health anxiety and intrusive worry
- Major depression and long-running low-grade depression
- Burnout, and the numbness that follows a long stretch of pushing through
- Postpartum mood and anxiety changes
- Anxiety and depression that sit on top of unprocessed trauma
Do I need medication?
Sometimes therapy alone is enough; sometimes medication makes therapy possible by turning the volume down enough to do the work. Pathfinder clinicians are counselors and therapists, not prescribers, so medication decisions stay with your physician, psychiatric provider, or VA care team. What we can do is give you a clear picture of what we are seeing so that conversation is better informed.
Sleep, alcohol, and the honest inventory
Two things get asked about early, without judgment: how you are sleeping, and what you are drinking or using to take the edge off. Both are extremely common ways of managing anxiety and depression, and both quietly make the underlying problem worse. Naming them plainly is not a moral conversation, it is treatment planning.
